Igwe Gift Okechukwu, a phony doctor, has been taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force. He is suspected of engaging in criminal conspiracy, organ trafficking, fraud, cybercrime, stealing, impersonating, cheating, and identity theft.
After the suspect engaged in fraudulent activity in Owerri, Imo State, Force Criminal Investigation Department agents conducted the arrest in Nasarawa State.
Posing as Henry Ovie, a recently transferred neurologist at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, the suspect duped Anita Chinwe Mathias, a point of sale (POS) operator, into entering a code on her POS system.
Consequently, her account was emptied of the total amount of twenty-one million naira (N21,000,000), which prompted a police report.
At a news conference in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi revealed the specifics of the arrest.
He described how the suspect gained the victim’s trust, sent a significant sum to her account, and then conned her into providing a code that allowed the illegal withdrawal.
Adejobi claims that Anita, the complainant, gave a story about how the suspect pretended to be both Ovie Henry and Igwe Richard using several phone numbers and identities.
“She went on to say that the suspect tricked her into entering a code on her POS machine on September 11, 2023, and she did so because she trusted him.”Following the suspect’s departure, she discovered that the entire twenty million naira (N21,000,000) had been taken out of her POS account, and her attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful.
