The federal government’s Renewed Hope Cash Transfer (RHCT) initiative is expected to help 102,650 people in 1,969 villages across all 18 local government areas in its second phase, which is a big development for Edo State.

The project, which is being carried out under the National Social Safety Nets Project Scale-Up (NASSP-SU), was introduced by Ms. Yuwa Aladeselu, the General Manager of the Social Investment Programmed (SIP) in the state. Its goal is to give the poor and vulnerable vital help.

Governor Godwin Obaseki’s dedication to effective intervention programs was emphasized by Ms. Aladeselu, who also emphasized the first phase’s success, which saw over 12,108 beneficiaries enrolled and paid in 2022. Out of 1.6 million people, over 314,000 households—including those with disabilities—are included in Edo State’s social register.

The program is in line with the federal government’s plan to assist over 15 million vulnerable and disadvantaged Nigerians through the Expanded National Social Safety Nets Program Scale-Up, according to Flora Bossey, Head of Unit, Edo State Cash Transfer. This extensive program includes Extended Regular Cash Transfers in rural areas and Economic Shock Response Cash Transfers in urban areas across the country.

The ongoing program aims to mitigate the impact of the elimination of fuel subsidies by primarily addressing current cash transfer beneficiaries who have not yet received 12 cycles of payment. The National Cash Transfer Office’s Enrollment Officer, Mohammed Adams, stressed how important facilitator training is to correctly collecting the 101,404 enrolled individuals’ biodata.

Significant financial inclusion is promoted via the payment delivery mechanism, which guarantees that monies are directly transferred into the recipients’ accounts and wallets at the appointed time. Adams emphasized the significance of this intervention in helping those most in need during trying times.

As the RHCT program’s second phase takes shape in Edo State, it highlights the cooperative efforts of federal and state authorities to provide essential financial assistance to populations that are at risk, in line with larger national goals.
