Investigation Into Beta Edu’s N585 Palliative Scandals

Edu ordered ₦585 to be sent into Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola’s personal account, according to a document that was leaked.

The Presidency revealed that it is looking into the payment of a grant totaling ₦585.189 million that was authorized by Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

A document that revealed Edu had ordered the payment of ₦585.189 million intended for vulnerable groups in the states of Lagos, Ogun, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom into a private account has put her under criticism.

The Minister directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to deposit the money into Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola’s UBA account in the leaked document, which was dated December 20, 2023.

Many Nigerians expressed suspicions of corruption in the approval process, prompting condemnation of the development from a variety of sources.

Additionally, a few civil society organizations demanded that the Minister be fired and subjected to questioning by anti-corruption agencies, and they called on President Bola Tinubu to refrain from allowing impunity.

In response to the calls, Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, stated, “The matter is under investigation,” and “appropriate Action will be taken thereafter.”

On Friday, January 5, 2023, Edu made a statement through her Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Rasheed Zubair, stating that the payment was made in accordance with the law.

Additionally, Zubair emphasized that the Minister is the target of a smear campaign by unhappy parties who want to undermine her character by accusing her of wrongdoing.

He went on to say that the funds were deposited into Bridget’s account because she serves as the project accountant for the Renewed Hope Grant for Vulnerable Groups.
