The rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Election Petition Tribunal were overturned by the supreme court, so invalidating Yusuf’s victory in the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election.
Justice John Okor delivered the verdict. According to NAN, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and his party, the NNPP, filed an appeal against the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which upheld the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal’s earlier decision to fire him.

The tribunal had sacked Yusuf and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revoke his certificate of return and instead issue same to the Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.
However, Yusuf had gone to the Appeal Court because he was dissatisfied with the Tribunal’s ruling. However, the appellate court concluded that the governor could not have been considered legitimately sponsored for the election because he was not a party member at the time of the election, even if it upheld his dismissal.
