According to a TETFund release, the Federal Government approved the allocation of N5,128,180,623 on Wednesday to support 185 research proposals that were successful in the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund 2023 Grant Cycle.

The permission was given in accordance to the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee’s recommendations, as stated by Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education. This committee, after a thorough screening procedure that started in March 2023, recommended funding for the 185 research applications.

During the screening process, 4,287 Concept Notes that potential applicants submitted were evaluated.

N3,784,635,923.00 was allotted for the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group, according to the breakdown of the authorized funds. Cross Cutting received N583,669,300.63, while Humanities and Social Science received N759,875,400.00. The funds that were given out individually varied in value from N8 million to over N46 million, indicating the wide range of funding allocations among the research applications that were accepted.

The statement featured a number of authorized research projects grouped into various thematic categories.

Among the projects under the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation theme group are:

1. Application of the Hydro-Biogeochemical Framework to Develop a National Rural Water Quality Assurance Plan for Sustainable Water Quality Management In Nigeria.
2. Doubled haploid maize lines are developed and used to increase maize yield and tolerance to armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda).
3. Creation of an Evaporative Cooling Preservative System with Multiple Chambers for Supervision of Selected Fruits in Nigeria After Harvest.
4. Among other things, the development of an electric vehicle with unique tracking features.

1. Using Scrap Tires and Plastic Wastes as Aggregate Conductive Material for Renewable Energy Storage System is one of the projects under the Cross-Cutting thematic group.
2. The creation of suitable technology to produce aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes for use in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.
3. Among other things, research into pulse electric fields for cancer treatment and wound healing, as well as the development of an affordable low voltage programmable electroporator.

The following projects have been approved under the Humanities and Social Science theme group:

1. Digital Financial Inclusion, Nigerian Rural Households’ Consumption Structure and Well-Being.
2. Equity and Inclusion: Enabling Students with Vision Impairments to Access Library Resources in Nigerian University e-Learning Environments.
3. Using Stress Inoculation Therapy to Reduce Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Nigerian Army Frontline Personnel, among Other Things.
