Sociopolitical activist Reno Omokri has urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately outlaw sports betting in Nigeria.
According to Omokri, outlawing sports betting will benefit the majority of Nigerians and strengthen the naira.
He accused the president of authorizing the Nigerian Communications Commission to outlaw betting applications and cancel the licenses of all brick-and-mortar sports betting companies in a post on X.
Omokri claims that President Tinubu can “immediately improve the economic conditions of most Nigerians and make the Naira grow by issuing an Executive Order authorizing the Nigerian Communications Commission to revoke the licenses of any physical sports betting operators in Nigeria and ban sports betting apps from the App Store of any GSM Internet service provider in Nigeria.” It is more logical than Buhari’s harsh #TwitterBan.
“Gambling is so widespread in Nigeria that it is harming the youth there. According to the National Lottery Trust Fund, Nigerians wager $1 billion every day. Kindly verify my facts. The majority of the $15 that the average Nigerian spends every day on sports betting and other forms of gambling leaves our country and travels to Europe, South Africa, and Russia. Under these conditions, the Naira can never hold its surge.
“Youths in Nigeria who use any means to obtain money to support their gambling habit are largely responsible for the country’s minor crimes. A top-tier accountant like Tinubu would be irresponsible if he did nothing about an issue that poses such a threat to our country’s security as the gambling epidemic.
