According to well-known cinematographer Buari Olalekan Oluwasegun, often known as Unlimited L.A., the purpose of incorporating foreign cultures and nudity into Nigerian music videos is to attract viewers.
According to him, depending on customer requests or target markets, some musicians ask directors of videos to include specific cultural elements or nudity in their music videos.
“Talking about it [the infusion of foreign cultures and nudity in Nigerian music videos], I think Nigerians are the most traveled people,” stated Unlimited L. A in a recent interview with Channels Television. I came across that somewhere.
As directors of music videos, our job is to follow the musicians’ lead. Some musicians may claim that they want a certain music video to resonate with their fans in the United States, Europe, or Africa. The customer is therefore crucial. We [music video makers] often simply throw everything out there, combining various cultures.
I believe that we incorporate different cultures into our music videos because of Nigerians who are dispersed over the world. It’s not as though our culture is inexistent. We also have a distinct culture. But we have to incorporate other cultures into music videos since we are aiming for a broad spectrum of viewers.
He claimed that despite the perception that certain foreign cultures are “eroding our cultural respect, decency,” they are nonetheless incorporated into Nigerian music videos in order to appeal to the public.
Speaking further, Unlimited L.A. acknowledged that the Nigerian cinematography business has advanced greatly, pointing out that while most Afrobeats music videos are recorded outside of Nigeria, the majority of Nigerian music videos were shot outside of the nation a few years ago.
