In anticipation of a potential political showdown with the ruling party in 2027, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has insulted PDP appellant Ladi Adebutu in the wake of the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding his election to a second term.

Shortly after arriving in his hometown of Iperu from Abuja following the Supreme Court ruling on Friday, Abiodun talked with reporters.

Adebutu and his party have hauled Abiodun before the electoral petition tribunal because they were not happy with the results of the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election.

With a total of 276,298 votes, Governor Abiodun was declared the victor of the poll. Adebutu came in second with 262,383 votes, trailing the winner by 13,915 votes.

However, the PDP candidate contended that since 99 polling places had to cancel the election and more than 40,000 voters cast ballots, exceeding the margin of 13,915 votes, INEC should have mandated a repeat of the poll.

However, the Supreme Court denied Adebutu and the PDP’s request for a rerun in the 99 polling places where the polls were canceled in a unanimous ruling.

The governor mocked the opposition by stating that the PDP would have to wait until after he had finished his second term in office in 2027 to have another chance to win.

“We hope our opponent, who has been announcing a rerun with great fanfare, can get ready for a 2027 rerun.

“After taking office in 2019, we have worked to build a basis for our legacies, which we will now maintain.

“We will continue to build on these victories and remain the fastest growing and most improved economy in Nigeria. You will see some of the goodies that we will be unveiling for the good people of Ogun State in the coming weeks.”

“Every attempt to divert our attention has failed; there has been psychological, emotional, and of course physical distraction as well,” he remarked.

Abiodun also expressed gratitude to the party’s leaders, especially President Bola Tinubu, saying that he wouldn’t be here today to celebrate the election’s outcome without his help.
