A Tribe Called Judah by Funke Akindele is the first Nollywood film to gross one billion naira at the box office, shattering the previous record.

On Thursday, January 4, 2024, a statement from FilmOne Entertainment, the filmmaker’s production partner on the movie, confirmed the milestone.

On December 15, 2023, A Tribe Called Judah made its national premiere in theaters. With a total of ₦113.3 million, it became the highest-grossing Nollywood opening weekend of the year. Throughout its nearly three-week run, the film has remained a huge hit with viewers, playing to capacity in theaters all around the nation. At the moment, it’s also airing in the UK.

A Tribe Called Judah ended 2023 with a total gross of ₦854.3 million, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of the year and the highest-grossing movie ever, according to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).

In addition, Akindele is the director of Battle on Buka Street, the second-highest grossing film in Nollywood history (₦668 million), and Omo Ghetto: The Saga, the third-highest grossing film ever (₦636 million).

The latest achievement, according to Moses Babatope, Group Deputy Managing Director of FilmHouse Group, indicates that Nigerian cinema is experiencing a golden age.

“Funke Akindele’s A Tribe Called Judah reaching the one billion naira mark is an indication that despite the stiff competition from international streaming platforms, our local content continues to thrive, engaging audiences on a grand scale,” he stated.

The story of A Tribe Called Judah centers on five brothers: Olumide Oworu as Ejiro Judah, Tobi Makinde as Shina Judah, Uzee Usman as Adamu Judah, Jide Kene Achufusi as Emeka Judah, and Timini Egbuson as Pere Judah. These brothers must band together to loot a firm in order to save their mother, played by Akindele as Jedidah Judah.
