Japa: Canada Launches Immigration Tech Talent Mechanism to Boost Job Opportunities

Working in Canada: A Comprehensive Guide for Nigerians

Canada has unveiled its first-ever immigration tech talent mechanism, aimed at creating fresh job opportunities for Nigerian citizens and individuals from other countries.

This development comes shortly after Germany passed a new immigration law to attract workers from outside the European Union.

Announced at the 2023 Collision Conference in Toronto, the new talent strategy includes several measures, such as improvements to existing initiatives. The goal is to stimulate business expansion within Canada’s competitive economy, according to Toronto News.

Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, stated at the event:

“Over the course of this year, Canada will be developing a specific stream for the world’s most highly talented individuals to come and work for tech companies in Canada—whether they have a job offer or not.”

Fraser also announced the introduction of a Digital Nomads Strategy, which allows individuals with foreign employers to live and work in Canada for up to six months.

Under this new talent mechanism, skilled individuals already residing in Canada can also explore job opportunities and potentially continue working within the country if successful.

“We’ve also been monitoring recent layoffs in the U.S. tech sector and have engaged in private conversations about leveraging potential opportunities,” Fraser added.

Starting July 16, Canada will open a new stream allowing 10,000 H-1B visa holders from the United States to apply for work in Canada.

Due to an aging population and declining birth rates, Canada is facing a shrinking labor force. To address this, the government is increasing efforts to attract young and skilled immigrants by rolling out immigration-friendly policies.

In 2022, Canada welcomed 437,120 Permanent Residents (PRs) — an 8% increase compared to the previous year, according to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Specifically for Nigerians, the number of PRs grew by 41.9%, rising from 15,595 in 2021 to 22,130 in 2022.

Last year, the Canadian federal government announced an ambitious plan to admit 500,000 immigrants annually by 2025, aiming to welcome nearly 1.5 million newcomers over the next three years.

“We’re excited about our ambitious immigration targets. These aren’t just about numbers—they are strategically focused on attracting newcomers who can help position Canada as a global leader in cutting-edge technologies,” Fraser emphasized.

In contrast to the UK’s recent policy restricting foreign students from bringing dependents starting next year, Canada has rolled out family-friendly immigration policies to support new residents.

Moreover, Canada’s Express Entry System now includes category-based selection to better address labor shortages and support economic growth.
