About the Role
Surge Africa is looking for a detail-oriented and self-motivated Research Associate for a six-month remote engagement. This role involves comprehensive desk-based research, where you will be responsible for delivering 20 in-depth research reports (each at least 10 pages) and 5 concise fact sheets (2–3 pages each) focused on critical themes such as climate finance, energy transition, resilience, and other related areas. Your contributions will help shape policies and practices that drive Africa’s sustainability agenda.
Thematic Focus Areas
Your research outputs will cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:
- Climate Finance and Policy: Adaptation and mitigation fund flows, green bonds, and budget gap evaluations
- Energy Transition: Renewable energy integration, just transition policies, and fossil-fuel phase-out strategies
- Resilience and Adaptation: Urban and rural resilience planning, ecosystem-based approaches, disaster-risk financing
- Governance and Accountability: Transparency in resource-sector revenues, regulatory assessments, and community engagement models
- Cross-cutting Issues: Gender and inclusion in energy access, youth-led innovation, digital monitoring tools
Key Responsibilities
Research and Writing
- Deliver 20 original reports (minimum of 10 pages each), each including an executive summary, methodology, findings, visual data representations, and tailored recommendations
- Create 5 fact sheets (2–3 pages each) with bullet-point highlights of key data, policy insights, and recommendations
- Cover themes including: climate finance flows, green bonds, renewable energy, resilience planning, transparency and governance, inclusion, and digital tools
Data Collection and Analysis
- Perform literature reviews, analyze quantitative data, and conduct interviews with key stakeholders
- Develop clear visual aids—charts, tables, infographics—to communicate complex findings
Project Management
- Establish a delivery timeline in the first month and meet weekly milestones (approx. 3–4 reports and 1 fact sheet per month)
- Participate in weekly check-ins, apply feedback promptly, and report any delays or obstacles
Collaboration and Quality Control
- Collaborate with Surge Africa’s senior researchers, external experts, and partner organizations to validate data
- Ensure all work aligns with Surge Africa’s editorial standards, citation style, and quality expectations
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent analytical and technical writing capabilities with a portfolio of at least 3 comparable research outputs
- Strong command of the English language—clear, concise, professional, and engaging writing
- Competence in data visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau) and reference management software
- Outstanding organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deliverables under tight deadlines
- Confident conducting interviews and synthesizing perspectives from various stakeholders
- High attention to detail: accurate fact-checking, formatting consistency, and polished final drafts
Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Climate Policy, Environmental Science, Economics, Energy Studies, or a related discipline
- Minimum of 2 years’ research experience in think tanks, NGOs, consulting firms, or academic institutions—preferably with a focus on African climate or energy sectors
- Familiarity with Nigeria’s policy environment and regulatory systems is an added advantage
- Basic graphic design skills for simple infographics are desirable
