Canada Eases Immigration Process by Removing IELTS Requirement for Non-Express Entry Applicants
In an effort to streamline immigration procedures for international students and workers, Canada has announced that applicants under the non-Express Entry Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) are no longer required to submit English Language proficiency test results for visa applications.
Canada, a top destination for immigrants, welcomes nearly 500,000 newcomers each year from around the world, according to data from Statista.
Understanding Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a Canadian government initiative that allows individual provinces to select and nominate immigrants who wish to live, work, or study in Canada.
Applicants can be nominated through either the Express Entry or non-Express Entry PNP pathways.
What This Means for PNP Applicants
Previously, all PNP applicants—regardless of their entry stream—were required to complete mandatory English language tests. However, recent program delivery updates now exempt non-Express Entry PNP applicants from this requirement.
Requirements Still Apply to Express Entry Candidates
While the new exemption applies to non-Express Entry PNP applicants, individuals applying through the Express Entry stream are still required to provide proof of English proficiency. Submitting an incomplete application without valid test results will lead to a return of the application.
Therefore, Express Entry applicants must continue to comply with the language testing requirements to avoid potential delays.
Accepted English Language Tests for Express Entry
Language tests approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) include:
- IELTS General Training (International English Language Testing System)
- CELPIP-General (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
- PTE Core
- TEF Canada (Test d’évaluation de français pour the Canada – for French)
- TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français pour the Canada – for French)
Canada Drops IELTS for Non-Express Entry: A Welcome Development
By removing the IELTS requirement for non-Express Entry PNP applicants, Canada has taken a significant step toward simplifying its immigration process and supporting the integration of skilled immigrants.
Aspiring immigrants are advised to stay informed about the latest changes in Canada’s language requirements and to follow the updated guidelines closely to improve their chances of successful immigration.
